For those outide of NZ know-how, the easiest place to fly into is Queenstown (15min from Arrowtown). Wanaka is an hours drive across the Crown Range. Christchurch is a much bigger airport, and the most beautiful drive via Lake Tekapo and Lake Twizel - this takes around 5+ hours.
